A few years back a study was conducted of the taste and smell of a bass. In this study the bass was found to be able to taste ( or smell ) 1-200th of a drop of a substance in a 100 gallon water tank ( simply put, an amazing sense of taste and smell ). Bass have four nostrils, two on each side of the head below the eyes. Bass breathe in water through the two lower nostrils, the water then washes over the olfactory folds, these organs are like mini trees which extract information on substances and then send messages to the brain. The water then passes through the two lower nostrils exiting back into the water. Bass continually breathe in water and test it for odors. If a bass picks up on a pleasing scent, it will investigate and use the olfactory organ to seek out the odor.
